I will not try to dissuade you of printing the whole megillah if that is
your desire, but I think you may find it a long, long run for a very
short slide. At php.net not only will you find the manual content (on
their web site) you also have the benefit of comments and code snippets
from a lot of accomplished programmers. I have found that using it as a
reference for specific issues works quite well.

If you are looking for an structured approach, I suggest you look into
courses at your community college. The instructor is likely to make
sense of all of the technical information (from the manual) in a
practical, applicable way.

And, 5,000 pages is a lot of trees.
