As I state in my reply to Denis, I think you may be right about the
incompatibility. I disabled the php_mysql module in my attempts to
drill down on the issue. I had thought it might have been a potential
source of conflict. The issue exists either way.

Thanks for seeing that. They should know their product better, but it
appears help is rare, which is why I thought I'd have better luck on the
good old Usenet. :)

You're right about that, too. If I could have used the extension, it
would have shaved considerable time porting the in-line parametric data
querying I seem to have been so fond of implementing in my applications.
Nevertheless, there is much that has to be done, anyway, and the time
I spend trying to debug the extension will soon outpace any time cost
savings.
