Then maybe you should read it again, specifically "Creating/modifying
with square bracket syntax". That tells you why it isn't working.
However:
$year = "60";
$alist = "art".$year;
$$alist = array(0 => array(0 => "00", 1 => "01"), 1 => array(0 => "10",
1 => "11"));
....is a small example of what you are trying to do.
