I have one "Test" forum in one category where anyone (even anonymous) can post and read.

One forum is only visible to administrators (there are 2 of them).

All the other forums are visible, but only logged in members (students) can read or post into them. I modified the template used on the frontpage to say (in french) "You must be logged in to read this forum", written in red. That's the only customization I made there.

No forum requires a specific password to post if that's what you meant. There are moderators in each forum, but the forum themselves are not moderated strictly speaking (no approval necessary).

My students are main lurkers, they very rarely post, but I can see them on the front page when they come and get files. I can also see what they are doing by clicking "Show what the others are doing". But most of them do not appear in Today's visitors once they are disconnected. Those that do are always the same I think.

And, as I said, it seemed to work well with 2.3.8, as far as I remember.
