You're partly right.

The .htaccess-mapping of .php to .php4 was NOT neccessary, but it wasn't the solution to my problem. I've deleted the .htaccess-file now.

The install.php is (as before) located in

/db/bbs

The data should be stored in

/db/bbs/data

Both directories are in 777 mode at runtime. And i'm still running into the Server Error 500.
