I have FUD forum integrated with mailing lists. Some messages posted to the forum seem to come back via the mailing list and get re-posted to the forum. I can tell by the IP address that the second post comes from the mailing list. Otherwise they're exactly the same, even with the same time/date stamp.

Also, some topics are created two or more times, even though the topic/subject is exactly the same. This appears to not be necessarily related to the mailing list integration. Sometimes a reply to an existing message will become a new topic instead of going under the original message as a reply to it, whether the reply was made via the forum or the mailing list.

I do have "Slow Reply Match" enabled. Any suggestions how to improve these situations?

Well, the forum adds a special header to the messages it sends back to the list. Based on the presense of this header it determines if the message should be imported or not.

As far as matching goes, it is primarily based on referneces header, which uses special ids to signify to which message the current messager is a reply to. In the absense of this value, if slow match is enabled, it tries to match things based on the subject.

Analyze the non-matched messages (headers n'all) and see why were they not matched, what was missing...

Found the problem. It's a lengthy explanation, but someone else might profit from it.

The mailing lists are set for restricted posting (only members can post). The FUD forum sends messages to the mailing lists as "from" the author. Messages posted by those who use the web forum only and are not members of the mailing list(s) will bounce as "non-member" submissions when they're sent to the majordomo list(s). I have a list of alternate acceptable addresses for those who post to the list(s) from more than one, and intended to add the forum-only users to it as they posted, then re-send the bounced messages. This only needs to be done once for each user who posts, but there were many of them the first few days after the new forum went online. My usual habit when re-sending bounced list mail is to add the "Approved:" header and delete all but the necessary ones. I had been unwittingly deleting the FUD-generated header in the process. That will not happen again.

BTW, the "old" FuseTalk forum from which we changed to FUD integrated with the mailing lists much differently. It sent all messages to the list(s) from one generic user, not the original author. For this reason, this situation did not exist and forum users were not already added to the alternate list. Also, I like the way FUD integrates with the mailing lists MUCH, MUCH more. To mailing list users, it looks like everyone is on the mailing list. To forum users, it looks like everyone is on the forum. It's great!!

Found the problem.

Well, it looks like I just found one of the problems. There are still messages coming back from the mailing lists and being re-posted to the forum with the mailing list sending IP address displayed. Each of these messages, when sent by the mailing lists, has all FUD headers intact. There must be another problem.

I've tried using the IP Filter to create a mask for the mailing lists' sending IP. So far it is not preventing posts made via the mailing list from being posted to the forum. I have not seen any duplicates which have been posted to the forum, gone out to the mailing list, and come back to be posted to the forum again, but the filter has not yet been in place very long. I'll keep an eye on it.

I'm still seeing messages posted to the forum go out over the mailing list and come back to the forum and getting re-posted to the forum under the mailing list's IP. These are not messages which have been edited and/or re-sent to the mailing list. No headers are being deleted or altered in any way. All FUD headers are intact.

This is happening whether or not "Slow reply match" is enabled. The IP filter had no affect.

Any suggestions?

If filter won't work against imported messages.

Send me a complete body & headers of one duplicate message as a text file.

I sent it via forum e-mail. Let me know if you didn't get it.

Didn't get it, probably a spam filter. Send it to me via a private message on the forum.
