I like the collapsing of groups, it can hide a lot of information. However, it would be nice to be able to tell quickly (without expanding a collapsed group) if there were any new messages inside of a group of collapsed forums.

Sounds interesting. Personally, however, I don't think it would be worth the effort required to code it.
