About 2 days ago users were unable to upload attachments, appeared out of nowhere. We couldn't trace it in the admin panel--> error log. We also ran a forum consistency check and optimize to try an clear the error, no doing.

I ssh'd into the host webserver to look at the error log. I was able to re-produce it to get more detail:

[Thu Oct 03 20:07:44.176275 2019] [:error] [pid 27362] [client 73.225.60.238:51003] [client 73.225.60.238] ModSecurity: Input filter: Failed to delete temporary file: /run/shm/modsec_tmp/20191003-200744-XZa3f5XUhEVkA@uGjA7eAAAAAAw-request_bod y-zSJAew [hostname "vintagegruen.org"] [uri "/internal_error.html"] [unique_id "XZa3f5XUhEVkA@uGjA7eAAAAAAw"], referer: http://vintagegruen.org/vgforum/index.php?t=post&reply_to=11185&

Googling tells me that modsecurity has no access on /root/tmp directory

Of course I do not have access to root on the server.

Looking for some advice and direction.

Thanks in advance!

Our host provider reconfigured ModSecurity and recycled apache. Lone behold it also fixed our linking issue that's been an issue for months (a bug in this forum that I also have to close).
