Okay....we've gone through hell and back over the past two weeks to have our data restored. Now we have it fixed and we were hoping to put up a blank forum and then restore the data to it.

BUT....we were using 2.3.3 stable and for some reason that version is missing from the download list.

You can't put up 2.3.3 stable data to another release can you?

What do we do now?

Please help!

You can download the upgrade script and upgrade your existing release to any latter versions.

The problem here was that we don't have a forum anymore, just the data (which was corrupted and repaired).

Our hosting company's server crashed, our data was corrupted (second time in a month), he said it was the fault of the script and not his responsibility to fix it and gave us 24 hours to get the data backup before he would shut down our site. We couldn't get the database backups because of some permissions problems with mysql, so eventually he relented and emailed us a backup of the database, still corrupted.

We had the database repaired, but it wouldn't restore to the latest version. Eventually we paid a programmer and he managed to get it up on 2.5.3rc1, but now the smileys and font stylings aren't working, and new members can't register, and parts of some old posts are showing up under member names that didn't make them.

There has to be an easier way than this.

Sounds like the programmer did not repair the data correctly. I suspect this has to do with the options inside GLOBALS.php not being set correctly or theme not being rebuilt after those options being changed.

Are there any written instructions on how the themes work and how to use/reset/repair them? I notice there is nothing in the manual and that area in the admin panel has no information or instructions.

I'd really like to learn about that area myself.

The online manual has a very brief explanation about the themes, probably not as detailed as it should be unforutnately. You do however have a web theme editor and most theme has a little bit of text explaining what sort of a page element they control.
