In the forum view I have a topic marked having new messages. So I open it. I see the first (oldest) posting, which I've seen days ago, so I skim through the whole topic until the new stuff comes. So question:

Is there an indication which allows me to see which postings have been read and which ones are the truly new ones ? Or a mode, which produces a view which has puts me right to the new stuff (like the links in the notifications).

Sorry for the probably stupid question, I'm certainly overlooking something obvious.....

If you use the tree view you'll have a read/unread indicator adjesent to each message. In regular flat view, there is no such indicator.

I guess he is referring to the same problem I had - after updating to 2.5.3RC3 I had been redirected to the first message in the topic on unread=1 instruction, even after I "marked all asread", and when I were in thread view I had light bulbs off according to what I actually read - and still the display messages page was pointing me to the first post...

We've discussed this "read/unread" issue in bugs http://fud.prohost.org/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=2717, no solution found and I guess wfjmueller has the same problem because his other topic here http://fud.prohost.org/forum/index.php?t=msg&th=3271 also seem to refer to the same problem of mysteriously non-working unread/notify actions...

P.S. BTW, your FUDcode insertion at the place of cursor as well as around selected text stopped working today in Netscape (yesterday or the day before it was working joyfully fine according to the changelog announces in release candidates section...)
P.P.S. It kicked me out to index.php again while trying to post this and did NOT posted the message - trying again...

Which version of netscape? (I didn't upgrade this forum for over a week, so any changes are probably on your end).

Were you browsing the forum while posting the message (in another browser window/tab)?

Netscape 7.1 for a few moths - no change on that level

Yes, I were! And today only one tab and it works again properly. I would never thought that can be the reason! Phew, happy now again Very Happy

Great, I changed my profile to use tree view now.

However, there are certainly users prefering the flat view as default, and I wonder how they can possibly figure out efficiently what is new in a longer thread. Since the information is obviously available it should be easy to also have such an indicator in this view. Maybe something for the new TODO list (if others second this....)

The problem with the flat view is not displaying the unread image but the fact you see up to 40 messages on a page. Consequently all of those 40 messages get marked read once you view them. So, if you view a page with 15 unread messages, you effectively maked all 15 as read. In tree view you view 1 message at a time, so the read/unread status makes sense.
