Hope this isn't a duplicate. I searched for sub-category, sub-categories, subcategory, subcategories, sub category, sub categories...

I recently discovered, to my infinite joy, that you had implemented the subcategory feature. This will greatly enhance my forum and make it easier to remove unnecessary forums from the Home display (or make them collapsable).

I created one, and discovered a problem, though. The problem is apparent to normal users, but not Admins. For Admins, all looks like it should:

- Cat 1
. . . forum 1a
. . . forum 1b
. . . forum 1c
. . . - Empty Subcat 1
- Cat 2
. . . forum 2a
. . . forum 2b

When a normal user looks at it, though, he sees:

-Cat 1
. . . forum 1a
. . . forum 1b
. . . forum 1c
. . . + Empty Subcat 1
- Cat 2
. . . forum 2a
. . . forum 2b

When they open Empty Subcat 1, they see:

-Cat 1
. . . forum 1a
. . . forum 1b
. . . forum 1c
. . . + Empty Subcat 1
. . . . . . forum 2a
. . . . . . forum 2b
- Cat 2
. . . forum 2a
. . . forum 2b

If they actually go into Empty Subcat 1, they see:

forum 2a
forum 2b

These forums actually reside under Cat 2.

Thinking maybe it was just a bug on empty subcats, I added a forum to Empty Subcat. No dice. It did show the new forum, but still showed Cat 2's forums as well.

Thoughts?

I'm using version 2.6.9 currently.

This is fixed in later releases, upgrade to 2.6.12RC1, or 2.6.11 and it'll go away.

Thanks!

I should've read the announcements before posting this issue. I saw it there right before I read your response.

Loving this forum-- thanks for all your hard work!

Must be 2.6.12RC. Upgraded to .11, and the problem still remains.

Installed .12 hoping it would fix my subcategory issue. It didn't.

Here's what we're seeing.

Original:

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
+ Cat 2
+ Cat 3

After adding a subcategory:

- Cat 1
. . . - SubCat A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
+ Cat 2
+ Cat 3
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c

Although Cat 1's forums still sort of belong to Cat 1, they're displayed below the rest of the categories. If we expand Cat 3, we see this:

- Cat 1
. . . - SubCat A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
+ Cat 2
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
. . . Forum 3a
. . . Forum 3b

Minor modification:

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . - SubCat A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
+ Cat 2
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
. . . Forum 3a
. . . Forum 3b

This is what it looks like. The first displayed form under Cat 1 is displayed correctly. It's the remaining ones that get moved down.

What's the file that needs to be installed? I'm not configured for CVS diffing the entire tree (I have to pull individual files from SourceForge).

Thanks.

Patch installed. Absolutely no change in the symptoms.

Is there anything we need to do in addition to moving the file in place?

OK. We're getting closer...

Here's what it looks like now...

- Cat 1
. . . forum 1a
. . . forum 1b
. . . forum 1c
. . . + SubCat A
- Cat 2
- Cat 3

If I expand SubCat A, I see...

- Cat 1
. . . forum 1a
. . . forum 1b
. . . forum 1c
. . . - SubCat A
- Cat 2
- Cat 3
. . . forum 1A1
. . . forum 1A2

The subcategory's forums are moved to the bottom of the list.

I have a small question now that I see a possible bug might creep up on me in this catagory usage.

I currently have:
-cat1
.forum1

.-subcat0
.forum0_0
.forum0_1
.forum0_2
.forum0_3
.forum0_4
.forum0_5

.-subcat1
.forum1_0
.forum1_1

and after making all of that I now see that I should have listed that entire cat1 and all of it's contents under yet one more catagory.

To look like this:
-cat01

.-cat1
.forum1

..-subcat0
 ..forum0_0
 ..forum0_1
 ..forum0_2
 ..forum0_3
 ..forum0_4
 ..forum0_5

..-subcat1
 ..forum1_0
 ..forum1_1

I'm afraid to make a new catagory and move that first listed tree under the new catagory. What do you think will happen in this case? I suppose I could back everything up and just go for it to see what happens. hmm..

After typing all of this, it would have taken me just as much time and effort to just try it and let you know, but now that I have gone this far.

Maybe I should add that in the end, sometime in the future it might end up looking like this:

-cat01

.-cat1 -cat2
.forum1 forum2

..-subcat0 -subcat2
 ..forum0_0 forum2_0
 ..forum0_1 forum2_1
 ..forum0_2 forum2_2
 ..forum0_3 forum2_3
 ..forum0_4 forum2_4
 ..forum0_5 forum2_5

..-subcat1 -subcat3
 ..forum1_0 forum3_0
 ..forum1_1 forum3_1

well, now I've just gone on too much.

Do Cat 2 & 3 have forums? They don't show up on my install here because they don't have any forums in them.

They have forums under them, they're just collapsed. If Cat 2 is expanded, its forums appear correctly. If Cat 3 is expanded, its forums appear correctly too-- but Cat 1's Subcat A's forums are appended to the end of Cat 3's listing.

Everything is appearing correctly-- just that the subcat's forums are displayed after everything else has been listed.

I should've shown +'s in front of Cat 2 and Cat 3 in my explanation before. Sorry!

All categories in our Forum have forums under them.

Prior to your patch, all Cat 1's forums (except the first one, for some reason) were moved to the bottom of the display. Cat 1's SubCat's forums were displayed correctly.

After the patch, all Cat 1's forums are displayed correctly under Cat 1. Cat 1's SubCat's forums, though, are moved to the bottom of the display, under any other categories that happen to be present.

Hope that clarifies.

OK. Now that stuff appeared to be showing up where it was supposed to, I decided to add another subcategory.

I received an error (which I sent you via private message due to path information). The new subcategory still seemed to show up under the correct spot in the admin screen.

In the private message, I told you that the new subcategory didn't show up in the normal view of the forum. I was wrong. It's showing up, just in a really unexpected place.

This is what we're seeing:

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
. . . - SubCat 1A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
. . . . . . - SubCat 3A
. . . . . . . . . Forum 3A1
. . . . . . . . . Forum 3A2
+ Cat 2
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 3a
. . . Forum 3b

Instead of being under Cat 3, the new Subcategory has been moved up under Cat 1's SubCat. Didn't really see THAT coming.

I take it back. The symptoms have gotten worse.

Now, along with the subcategory showing under the previous subcategory, all forums under Cat 2 and Cat 3 are listed at the end of the display, regardless of whether their categories are expanded or not...

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
. . . - SubCat 1A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
. . . . . . - SubCat 3A
. . . . . . . . . Forum 3A1
. . . . . . . . . Forum 3A2
+ Cat 2
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 2a
. . . Forum 2b
. . . Forum 3a

Added a subcategory, and everything looked good.

Added a couple of additional subcategories, and moved one category under a different one, and more weirdness was displayed...

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
+ Cat 2
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 3a
. . . Forum 3b
. . . - SubCat 1A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
. . . - SubCat 2A
. . . . . . Forum 2A1
. . . . . . Forum 2A2
. . . - SubCat 3A
. . . . . . Forum 3A1
. . . . . . Forum 3A2

Now, ALL subcategories are displayed at the bottom of the list.

Please give complete instructions to replicate the problem. So far I was unable to replicate the problem you've reported on my test forum.

I started out with the following structure (more or less):

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
. . . SubCat 1A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
. . . . . . Forum 1A3
- Cat 2
. . . Forum 2a
. . . Forum 2b
. . . Forum 2c
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 3a
. . . Forum 3b
. . . Forum 3c

I added a sub category for Cat 2, and moved a couple of its forums underneath. This left me with:

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
. . . - SubCat 1A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
. . . . . . Forum 1A3
- Cat 2
. . . Forum 2a
. . . - SubCat 2A
. . . . . . Forum 2b
. . . . . . Forum 2c
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 3a
. . . Forum 3b
. . . Forum 3c

Everything looked great. Then I decided to do something similar with Cat 3. No sooner did I add a subcategory for Cat 3, and I saw this:

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
- Cat 2
. . . Forum 2a
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 3a
. . . Forum 3b
. . . Forum 3c
. . . - SubCat 1A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
. . . . . . Forum 1A3
. . . - SubCat 2A
. . . . . . Forum 2b
. . . . . . Forum 2c

No SubCat 3A was visible (probably because I hadn't assigned any forums to it yet), and all other subcategories were moved to the bottom of the list.

Actually adding forums from Cat 3 to the SubCat 3A made it appear at the end of the list:

- Cat 1
. . . Forum 1a
. . . Forum 1b
. . . Forum 1c
- Cat 2
. . . Forum 2a
- Cat 3
. . . Forum 3a
. . . - SubCat 1A
. . . . . . Forum 1A1
. . . . . . Forum 1A2
. . . . . . Forum 1A3
. . . - SubCat 2A
. . . . . . Forum 2b
. . . . . . Forum 2c
. . . - SubCat 3A

Upon further investigation, it appears that weirdness occurs only if I attempt to stick subcategories under the last two categories.

I've actually got 5 categories total. It's looking like I can add subcategories all day under the first 3. As soon as I do anything with the last 2, though, all hell breaks loose.

I followed your steps on my dev forum, but no matter what I do I cannot replicate the bug.
Send me the SQL data inside the category & forum tables and I'll try using that to replicate the bug.

Here is the SQL output for your request. In case you hadn't guessed, Egon and I are co-admins of our forum, but I'm the only one with full access to the server.

Erhmm... could you send me a mysql dump (actual queries needed to re-create the data), I don't want to manually re-input the values.

Okay. This is are two dumps from postgres using pg_dump -aDt. You might have to remove a couple commands from the dump as they have to do with pg_catalog or something like that.

Here is the fix, the code didn't account for integer overflows on 32bit systems in PHP.

I think that's got it! Added multiple sub-categories, and moved a couple of existing categories under others, and everything appears where it's supposed to!

Thanks!

One nitpicky suggestion-- not critical. The category names are indented in a tree fashion, but any forums underneath are left-justified to the outer margin. It would be nice to indent those under their subcategories. Not sure how easy that would be, though.
