Hi
One of my students had the idea to use the tag [font=symbol] to produce mathematical symbols in a message, although this font is not displayed in the dropdown list of the edition window. It allows to write greek letters, and other mathematical symbols "easily".
What about offering this font in the dropdown list ? I don't know how standard it is but it is surely useful.
Also would be useful for writing maths : a button that pops up a window and allows to chose a character displayed in a table (like the menu "insert special character" in text writing software)...
What do you think ?

While I see how this feature would be of use to scientific forums, this is not a general case and many browsers do not support symbol font. However, on your forum you can easily add the addtional font to the dropdown by editing the post_common.tmpl template.
