currently my host limits me to 100mb mysql databases, what are some good practices in keeping the database small? i know the messages are not kept in the database so it really should not get that big.

currently its 13mb thats with 300 users, 17043 messages inside 2482 topics

is there a way to calculate average database growth?

You can use admin stats control panel to see your current mysql disk space usage and based on # of message extrapolate your future disk requirements.
