call to undefined function mail() [message #22109]

I have this problem all the time, but not every time
It appeared after I upgraded to 2.6.9? but not at once, it was after the admin changed Apache 1.3.27 => 1.3.33 � PHP 4.3.1 => 4.3.9

The error is
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: mail() in /forum/theme/slashed_path/post.php on line 2417
Or in other involved file in relevant place

This is giving serious troubles, especially with new users registrations which seem to stop working for approval...

Could you help please what could be the problem? Rolling Eyes
